Core team FAQ

Our mission in Edge is to lead teens closer to Christ.
We have been able to do this at St. Ann's because of Catholic adults responding to their baptismal call and serving our teens as Core members.

Very simply, a Core member's job is to share Jesus Christ with teens. You don't have to be an expert on scripture and you don't need to have a theology degree. Your responsibility is to love teens and show them that they are loved by God.

Our Edge Sessions are Mondays 5:30-7:00pm, Mondays 7:30-9:00pm, and Tuesdays 5:30-7:00pm.

Q: What is a Core member?
In Edge, our Core members are upperclassmen and adult volunteers who lead our middle schoolers. They dive in completely each week in everything from games to leading discussions to guiding in prayer.

Q: How much of a time commitment is it to be a Core member?
When you sign up to be an Edge Core member, you select one of the three sessions to volunteer with for the entire semester: Mondays 5:30-7:00 pm, Mondays 7:30-9:00 pm, and Tuesdays 5:30-7:00 pm. Whichever session you select, you will meet in Nolan Hall thirty minutes prior to the session start time. This means that as a Core member you will commit to 2 hours each week.

Q: What does an "Edge Session" look like?
From week to week, the way each Edge Session is executed may look a little bit different but it will always follow the overall format of: Gather, Proclaim, Break, and Send. It starts with an opening game or activity to get everyone involved. From there, it moves into the teaching or the content for the night which is given by one of our Youth Ministers or a guest speaker. Next, the session splits into small groups for discussion with questions focusing on how the content is relevant to their lives today. Lastly, everyone will gather once again for the closing prayer experience.

Q: Do I teach or write lesson plans?
No. The content for Edge sessions is delivered by one of the Youth Ministers or a guest speaker and is given in the large group setting. Your responsibility is to guide the conversation in your small group after the talks. Small group questions are provided.

Q: Do I need to like middle schoolers?
No one ever admits to liking middle schoolers. :) The only thing you need to have is some patience and a heart to love. We will teach you everything else!

Q: Is there an age requirement?
In order to serve as an adult Edge Core member, you need to be 21 years old. There are also high school Core members who lead alongside of the adult Core members.

Q: Do I need to have a background check?
Yes. The Archdiocese of Atlanta requires all of our adult volunteers who volunteer with youth to have a current background check on file (they are good for 5 years). The Archdiocese of Atlanta also requires VIRTUS training to be completed (which is also good for 5 years). Once you sign up, we will give you your next steps to complete the background check.

Q: How long is the commitment?
We ask all of our Core members to commit to the entire school year to help maintain a level of consistency. That said, you can join later on in the year as long as you can commit to the remainder of the year!

Q: How much do I need to know in the way of Scripture, theology, etc.?
You don't need to come in with any prior knowledge. We will teach you everything that you need to know.
