Missionaries of music: Volunteers showcase talents and rake in smiles

John Tapley watched as the excitement rippled across the room.

“The residents start out slow and curious in the beginning, then the toes start tapping, the heads are bobbing, the hands come together and the smiles and laughter begin. Before you know it, everybody in the room is singing together.”

He’s describing a performance by what might be St. Ann’s most unique ministry: The Evangelists Variety Show. Performed by seniors for seniors, the ministry is in its ninth year of bringing song, dance, comedy, trivia and scripture to senior residences throughout our community. Their intangible brand of outreach is measured in smiles.

“The people who get into this have the biggest hearts in the world,” said ministry leader Christine Holt. “Their talents expand because that’s God’s gift to us.”

The seasonally themed shows run about 90 minutes and are developed around the ministry members available to perform that week. Much of the show’s material hails from yesteryear, songs and references that senior audiences recognize.

Volunteers who aren’t musical find roles reading scripted portions of the show or simply sitting with seniors and turning the pages of their singalong books. To be a part of the ministry, Holt said, all you have to do is report with a smile, a song in your heart and a willingness to join in the fun.

“What a blessing Christine and her cast are,” said Tapley. “It’s heartwarming to witness the love and transformation they bring to seniors.”
