Sacristans
Purpose
Sacristans serve the assembly by preparing all the physical elements needed for the Mass. They prepare the vessels for the Eucharistic Liturgy, put out appropriate quantities of bread, assist the presider and other ministers in vesting, ensure that the books are properly placed, and clean the vessels after they have been purified.
Skills
Sacristans must be attentive to detail and be flexible
during the celebration. They need to familiarize themselves with the
placement and storage of vessels and Mass articles in the Sacristy.
Sacristans must be trained and certified as Extraordinary Ministers.
Contact
Please contact the Liturgy Office at extension 6013 if you’d like to
become a Mass Sacristan.
Benefit
By being responsible for the material things of worship,
sacristans grow in appreciation of how
liturgy "works" as a series of signs. By enabling reverent
and joyful celebrations, sacristans create a hospitable house for the
church as they ready the room for celebration.
Time Commitment
Sacristans are typically scheduled one to four times a month, depending upon Mass preference.
