LIFELINE FOR MOMS: CHRISTMAS EVENT PROVIDES FUNDS YEAR-ROUND

Mothers’ Enrichment was born more than 10 years ago, prompted by a need for community among women of young children. At the time, moms couldn't always access free babysitting during Bible studies and volunteer work at St. Ann’s.

“We, as a parish, need those young moms who give so much to our faith community,” said Christy Maetz, who founded the group with Kerri Pailthorpe. “And those young moms need the faith community and activities to stay connected and to feel God’s love for them during such a self-sacrificing and exhausting time in their lives.”

The group, ME for short, offers babysitting to any St. Ann ministry that does not have money in its budget for child care. To pay for this service, ME runs an annual event, Cookies and Cocoa with Santa, the proceeds of which cover babysitting costs for the year. The fundraiser, which morphed from Breakfast with Santa in 2018, builds our church community, said parishioner Beth Kosbab.

“This event has grown over the years and has now turned a page,” she said. “We have swapped out pancakes for cookies to create a more sustainable event.”

“I have moved on from that phase of my life,” Maetz said, “but I hope and pray the ministry continues.”
